Oddie became known to the British public for combining entertainment and environmental education. After achieving fame in comedy, he began presenting productions about birds and other animals, consolidating himself as one of the main British television personalities linked to wildlife.
When announcing his death, Foster highlighted his friend's intelligence, humor and role in protecting nature. According to the agent, Oddie used his notoriety to encourage different generations to respect the environment and participate in conservation campaigns.
"Bill was a multi-talented celebrity: wildlife host, radio host, comedian, writer, composer, musician and conservationist. However, fame was never what he valued most," he said.
Foster added that the presenter dedicated himself to protests, campaigns and environmental awareness actions throughout his career. For him, Oddie's contribution to nature conservation will not be forgotten.
The family asked for privacy. Bill is survived by his wife, Laura, and daughters Bonnie, Kate and Rosie.
Before establishing himself as a presenter of nature attractions, Oddie gained prominence in the 1970s as a member of the comic trio “The Goodies”, alongside Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden. The program of the same name was originally shown between 1970 and 1980 and gained new productions at the beginning of the following decade.
Passionate about birds since childhood, when he lived in Birmingham, the Briton became a respected observer and student of the subject. At the BBC, he directed productions such as “Birding with Bill Oddie”, “Bill Oddie Goes Wild”, “Springwatch” and “Autumnwatch”.
Oddie also held positions and collaborated with entities dedicated to the protection of animals and the environment, including the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and the World Wide Fund for Nature. Throughout his career, he also worked as a writer, musician, composer and defender of environmental campaigns.
