Government members say that the United States (US) military response has already entered a new phase. One official summed up the stance like this: "Let's hit them a little so they understand we're not kidding."
US Central Command confirmed that it concluded the most recent round of retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets on Thursday morning. The internal assessment is that the White House still has room to increase pressure.
This reading passes through oil traffic in the strait. Officials said hundreds of oil tankers have crossed the Gulf in recent weeks, reducing fears of an immediate jump in oil prices.
WHAT WEighS ON US STRATEGY
In the government's view, Iran has lost some of the advantage it had in Hormuz. The passage of ships along the southern route, close to the coast of Oman, weakened this pressure power, according to this assessment.
Another American source attributes the escalation to the most radical wing of the Iranian leadership. According to this assessment, the group was frustrated with the memorandum of understanding, which would not have delivered real gains to Tehran.

WHAT TRUMP AND IRAN SAID
Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he considers the memorandum of understanding with Iran to be over. At a press conference at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Ankara, he said: "For me, it's over."
Trump also claimed that the US wasted a lot of time in negotiations with Tehran. Afterwards, on Air Force One, he said that Iranian authorities called and "wanted to make a deal", but he questioned whether they would fulfill an agreement.
Iran has not yet publicly responded to Trump's statements. In a post on X, chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused the US of intimidation and breaking promises and said: "If they attack, they will be hit."
Ghalibaf added that the Strait of Hormuz will only be reopened on Iran's terms. He stated that the passage will not depend on "American threats" but on "Iranian arrangements."
