Trump wants Infantino to run for UN secretary general

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, is considering supporting FIFA president Gianni Infantino for the position of secretary general of the United Nations (UN), according to the New York Post newspaper this Tuesday.

According to the publication, which cites unidentified sources, Trump assesses that the 56-year-old Swiss leader has international credibility and the ability to dialogue with different sectors. The perception would have been strengthened by the partnership between the two during the organization of the 2026 World Cup.

The mandate of the current UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, ends in December. The successor will be chosen later this year, in a process that begins with the recommendation of the Security Council, where the United States has veto power. The nomination must then be approved by the organization's General Assembly.

Throughout his two terms, Trump maintained a troubled relationship with the UN and multilateral organizations. During this period, the United States left the Paris Climate Agreement, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the UN Human Rights Council.

The rapprochement between Trump and Infantino intensified during the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada. The two participated together in several events related to the tournament.

In December, Trump received the first FIFA Peace Prize from Infantino, created by the entity that governs world football.
