Republican United States Senator Lindsey Graham, a close ally of President Donald Trump, has passed away very "suddenly."

Graham was chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and was running in November for a fifth six-year term. He was also one of the best-known members of the chamber and a fundamental voice within the party on defense and international affairs, also known for his support for Israel and the maintenance of the United States' military projection in the world.

Before he died, the man had spoken to the President of the United States, Trump revealed yesterday, noting that "during the call he said: 'You know, I feel good. But I'm tired'. I knew him very well and he would tell me if he wasn't feeling well."

Asked about the exact moment he spoke to the Republican senator, Trump pointed out that "it could have been minutes before" the death.

Causes of death

However, on Sunday night, the conclusions of the preliminary report into the cause of Lindsey Graham's death would be revealed. It's worth remembering that emergency crews had responded to a "cardiac arrest" call at Graham's Capitol Hill residence, according to police communications obtained by NBC News.

According to the medical report, the republican died due to a ruptured aorta, caused by the hardening of the arteries. The data was revealed by the AP news agency, which added that the official cause of death will still be confirmed after additional tests.

Defender of a firm stance towards Russia and defender of Ukraine, the politician recently returned from a visit to Kyiv and, on the eve of his death, announced an agreement with the Trump administration to move forward with a new package of sanctions against Moscow.

A "patriot" and great "friend" of Israel is lost

Shortly after the news of his death, the first demonstrations began to emerge. Donald Trump was one of the first to mourn the death of someone he defined as "a great patriot".

"Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the most extraordinary people and senators I have ever met, has passed away. He was always working and a true American patriot," Trump wrote on his social network.

This was followed by Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, who stated that he had just lost a "great friend".

"Lindsey understood that the security of Israel and the United States are inseparable" and "Israel has lost one of its greatest friends," said Netanyahu, in a statement published by his office.

Other international leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, Mark Rutte and Volodymyr Zelensky mourned the death of the US senator, highlighting their support for Ukraine and NATO.

The president of the European Commission stated that Graham "fought to the end to support Ukraine's fight for freedom and increase the cost of the war of aggression led by Russia."

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also expressed sadness over the death of the senator, whom he described as "a staunch supporter of the United States who deeply believed in the Atlantic Alliance."

Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine has lost a "steadfast defender" and that "the United States and the world have lost a determined leader."

A Republican from South Carolina, Graham served more than three decades in Congress and was one of the most influential figures in United States foreign policy, having traveled the world advocating a more aggressive American foreign policy.
