The tornado hit northeastern Wisconsin on Monday afternoon (27) and traveled about 19 kilometers. There are no reports of deaths or missing people, although authorities report injuries without reporting the total.
Properties had roofs ripped off, vehicles overturned and poles fell in the three cities in the region known as Fox Cities. Teams went door to door on Tuesday (28) to assess the damage and assist residents.
More than 15,000 customers remained without electricity in Winnebago and Outagamie counties on Tuesday. PowerOutage.us reports that restoring service may take several days.
Authorities opened shelters for displaced residents and issued a boil water advisory in part of Fox Crossing. The area's supply system lost pressure after the tornado hit.
Preliminary data indicates an EF3 rating for the tornado, which remained on the ground for more than 20 minutes. The US National Weather Service estimates that winds reached between 219 km/h and 266 km/h.
The phenomenon formed from a large storm system that crossed the Great Lakes region. The weather service blames the system on heat and humidity buildup.
Heather Schroeder reported hearing loud pops as the tornado destroyed a laundromat, bakery and bar in Menasha. "There's nothing left," he said.
