Wearing very tight underwear frequently can cause irritation, increase humidity in the genital region and encourage the emergence of infections. The warning comes from urologist Anika Ackerman, who recommends replacing tight-fitting pieces with more comfortable models that allow greater air circulation.
Tight underwear can encourage irritation and infections, says doctor

In an interview with Parade magazine, the doctor explained that the problem tends to mainly affect women. Heat, sweat and poor ventilation create an environment favorable to the proliferation of fungi and can alter the natural balance of microorganisms around the vulva.
“In women, underwear that is too tight and does not allow the skin to breathe can create a hot and humid environment, which contributes to irritation or changes in the balance of bacteria and fungi in the vulva region,” he said.
According to the expert, tight-fitting pieces do not directly cause urinary infections, but they can increase the vulnerability of some women, especially those who already have recurring episodes.
The female urethra is shorter, which makes it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder. For this reason, urinary infections are more common among women than among men.
Excessive friction can also cause redness, itching and contact dermatitis. People who exercise or sweat heavily are at greater risk of developing fungal infections, such as groin ringworm.
"Tight underwear increases friction, traps heat and moisture, and can cause irritation and contact dermatitis. If there is persistent redness or itching, the underwear may be part of the problem," Ackerman explained.
Men can also feel the effects of continually wearing very tight clothing. The increase in temperature in the scrotum region can interfere with sperm production, although the doctor emphasizes that the impact on fertility is usually small.
Deep marks on the skin, a feeling of pressure, discomfort and limited movement are signs that the size or model of the underwear may not be suitable. The piece must remain firm on the body, but without compressing the region.
What can promote urinary infections
Most urinary infections are caused by the bacteria Escherichia coli, found naturally in the intestine. Some habits make it easier for microorganisms to enter the urinary tract.
Holding urine for long periods is one of them. Urinating helps eliminate bacteria present in the urethra, while repeatedly postponing going to the bathroom reduces this natural cleaning mechanism.
Intimate hygiene also requires care. After using the bathroom, the recommendation is to wipe the toilet paper from front to back, avoiding taking bacteria from the anal region to the urethra.
Drinking little water can increase your risk because it reduces urine production and the frequency of bathroom visits. As a result, bacteria remain in the urinary tract for longer.
External and internal pads must be changed regularly. Keeping these products for many hours favors humidity and the multiplication of microorganisms.
People with kidney stones may also experience recurring infections. Stones can make it difficult to pass urine and prevent the urinary system from emptying properly, creating conditions for bacterial proliferation.
Pain or burning when urinating, frequent urge to go to the bathroom, changes in the color or smell of urine and abdominal discomfort require medical evaluation.
