SÃO PAULO, SP (UOL/FOLHAPRESS) - A 39-year-old American woman had to be hospitalized and was in serious condition after being bitten by around 15 spiders during a camping trip with her family in Kansas, USA. Britagne Miller was attacked in Cheney State Park, near Lake Cheney.

In an interview with American broadcaster KAKE, an ABC affiliate, she said: "I felt like 15 spiders were crawling up my legs and into my shirt. I'm terrified of spiders. I got bites on both sides of my leg."

Severe pain in her right leg led Miller to be admitted to Wesley Hospital, in Wichita, on June 4, after the episode that occurred on May 28. She described the sensation as “feeling like I was being stabbed,” according to a report published by the Daily Mail.

Family created campaign to help with treatment. A kitty raised by her husband, Jake Miller, says a large bruise formed on her calf and required surgery to remove clots and drain the affected area. "A huge bruise has formed on her right calf from the bite," he wrote on the GoFundMe page.

Clinical picture became more delicate. Britagne Miller already had two rare blood diseases and end-stage liver failure, which increased her risk of bleeding. In the campaign, Jake stated that doctors said she could have "only days to a month to live" and recommended palliative care.

Infection caused necrosis. Even with signs of improvement after transfusions and antibiotics, Miller had a bloodstream infection and staph infection, with necrosis around the operated area. "The infection caused tissue necrosis around the stitches, and doctors had to perform two bedside procedures to remove dead skin and administer additional antibiotics," Jake reported on GoFundMe.

Family states that recovery depends on a liver transplant, but that she still needs to stabilize her condition to undergo the procedure. Jake said that his wife remains determined to continue treatment and summed up the moment: "I saw her endure more pain than I ever imagined a person could face, but, somehow, she still finds the strength to fight."

Husband claims he lost his job after staying by his wife's side during hospitalization and taking care of the couple's four children, aged 9, 12, 14 and 15. "Because I was unable to maintain the work hours required by my employer during this medical emergency, I lost my job," he wrote in the campaign.

In a personal account, Britagne said she was discharged to continue treatment at home, but still feels constant pain and uses a suction device on the wound on her leg. She wrote: "They finally sent me home. The tests are stable. There is still room for improvement in several areas. At least the results are not fluctuating. The kidneys are working well. The liver situation is still uncertain. The leg hurts terribly, non-stop.

Doctors have not identified the species precisely, but believe that the lesions are compatible with a brown spider bite. According to the Daily Mail, this is one of two poisonous species native to Kansas and can cause anything from mild irritation to serious injuries and infections, depending on the body's reaction.
