STF denies request from the Paraná Assembly and impeachment of Renato Freitas remains suspended

The decision is monocratic and is still subject to validation by the other ministers. Alep took the case to the STF after the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) denied the appeal and maintained an injunction from the Court of Justice of Paraná (TJ-PR) suspending the vote. The Alep plenary had scheduled the analysis of the revocation process for June 16th.

The process is confidential. In a note, Alep informed Estadão that it will await the referendum on Fachin's decision by the STF plenary.

"The Assembly respects the decision, but understands that the issue must be analyzed by the Plenary of the Court, especially since the Attorney General's Office expressed its favor to the appeal presented by the House. For this reason, it will appeal so that the case can be considered by all the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court", states the statement.

In May, the Alep Ethics Council decided to revoke the deputy's mandate for breach of parliamentary decorum due to a street fight, in the center of Curitiba, which took place in November 2025. The physical attacks between him and the valet Wesley de Souza Silva were recorded on videos. The deputy says he is a victim of "systematic political persecution" and claims it is a "game of marked cards".

The opinion for the impeachment of Renato Freitas was presented by deputy Márcio Pacheco (Republicanos-PR), who is involved in an episode of the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) that led to another punishment for Freitas. His suspicion was highlighted in a separate vote by deputy Doutor Antenor (PT-PR), who also argued that, during the fight, Renato was not exercising his mandate. In a separate vote, the PT member suggested milder penalties, but it was an unsuccessful vote.

The complaint against Freitas was presented by four councilors from Curitiba and three state deputies. At the end of March, the Ethics Council heard the witnesses of the fight, such as the valet and two people who accompanied Freitas at the time. Renato presented his defense two weeks after hearing the witnesses and claimed that he acted to stop a possible aggression and defend his daughter's mother.

Last week, the House's CCJ decided to maintain the Ethics Council's decision to suspend Freitas' regimental prerogatives for 30 days due to two disciplinary proceedings for breach of decorum. In one, he is accused of disrupting the operation of a supermarket in Curitiba during a protest held there.

The other concerns a confusion between Freitas, Márcio Pacheco and an advisor to Pacheco during a CCJ meeting, of which the two parliamentarians are members. Now, the Ethics Council will take the case to the Alep plenary.
