Known for playing neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd on the series "Grey's Anatomy", the actor published an opinion article in one of Maine's main newspapers to clarify rumors about a possible entry into politics. According to him, residents of the state began to question him about a possible candidacy for the Senate after the crisis involving Democrat Graham Platner's campaign, marked by accusations of sexual assault.
Despite thanking voters for their support and trust, Dempsey stated that he believes he will be more useful outside of politics, continuing the work carried out by the Dempsey Center, an organization created by him and his family to offer support to cancer patients and their families. "I believe I can contribute more effectively through the life I have already built."
The actor also highlighted that his experience leading the institution reinforced his vision about the importance of collaboration between people with different profiles towards a common goal. "I've seen volunteers, healthcare professionals, small businesses, large corporations, donors and neighbors come together for a single purpose: to care for people during some of the most difficult times in their lives."
In the publication, Dempsey also defended democratic coexistence and collective responsibility. "Democracy depends on more than elections. It depends on trust, responsibility, respect for the Constitution, and a willingness to believe that people with different opinions are still our fellow Americans," he wrote.
At the end of the article, the actor reinforced that he will continue to contribute through social actions, and not politics. "Whether you're an elected official, a teacher, a nurse, a business owner, a parent or a volunteer, service starts with a simple question: How can I make someone's life a little better?
