"I think Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs to The Hague," said the Democratic politician, who classified Tel Aviv as an "apartheid regime", in an interview published this Saturday (18). "He is a war criminal wanted by the International Criminal Court."
Mamdani also stated, on the other hand, that he is still not sure whether he has the authority to order the detention of a foreign leader to the New York police, but he is discussing the matter with his legal team. "Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that's what we're going to do," he said.
The UN General Assembly, a kind of "global Congress" that brings together world leaders and one of its functions is to approve the annual budget of the United Nations, will be held in September, at the organization's headquarters in New York.
In the past, Mamdani promised to send New York police to serve arrest warrants against leaders wanted by the ICC (International Criminal Court), including Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Created in 2002 and headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, the ICC can prosecute individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The court stated in 2024 that it had reason to believe that Netanyahu is responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity related to Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip following the October 7, 2023 attack carried out by the terrorist group Hamas.

The New York mayor's statements come five days after Donald Trump's government announced an escalation of the offensive against the ICC. United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on social media that the court represents "an intolerable threat to American sovereignty" and promised to increase sanctions against its members.
Trump, who has already applied sanctions against the court on the grounds that the ICC targets the US and its allies, has put pressure on the court due to its actions against Israeli leaders and American citizens.
