The accident occurred at around 7:45 pm (local time) on Saturday, at a crossing with traffic lights. The police are investigating whether the equipment was faulty at the time of the crossing or whether the woman did not notice the red light, according to information from the German newspaper Bild.
The train involved was the regional RE45, which ran from Heilbronn to Karlsruhe. The driver applied emergency braking, but was unable to avoid being run over.
The woman managed to get the child off the railway line moments before being hit. "At the last moment, the woman pushed the cart off the tracks and was then struck by the train," police chief Thomas Schuster told the news outlet.
The child was not injured, according to police. "The girl in the stroller, fortunately, remained unharmed," added the police authority.
Firefighters isolated the area and police examined the area. Rescue teams also provided care to train passengers after the impact.
Forty-three people were on board and none were injured. The police reported that they continue to collect evidence to understand why the woman entered the passage as the train approached.
