The statements were revealed by the newspaper Le Monde and provide new details about the action, which took place in October last year.
According to interrogations, Abdoulaye N. and Ghelamallah A. stated that they were recruited a few days before the crime and received a video recorded inside the Apollo Gallery to plan the invasion. The duo took eight pieces, including tiaras, necklaces and earrings, but dropped the crown of Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, during their escape. "What we did was very serious," Abdoulaye N told investigators.
Abdoulaye stated that he agreed to participate in the theft due to financial difficulties and that he would receive between EUR 15,000 and EUR 20,000, while Ghelamallah said he believed that the target would be a jewelry store, and not the most visited museum in the world. Both reported that they had about three minutes to break the display cases and collect as much jewelry as possible before security arrived.
The suspects said they had delivered the stolen pieces to the alleged mastermind, who intended to resell them, but refused to reveal their identity for fear of reprisals. According to Le Monde, investigators have not yet confirmed that the pair were acting in the service of another person.
