Guterres expresses concern about military escalation in Iran
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres is deeply concerned about the escalating conflict between Iran and the United States, especially attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran and across the region....
At a press conference this Friday (17), in New York, UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq stated that these attacks are "unacceptable" and reiterated Guterres' conviction that there is no military solution to the crisis.
"The Secretary-General remains deeply concerned about the military escalation between Iran and the United States of America. He is particularly concerned about attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran and across the region. These attacks are unacceptable," Haq said.
According to the spokesperson, Guterres defends the strengthening of diplomatic efforts to achieve a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict, which includes the full restoration of navigation rights and freedoms in the Strait of Hormuz.
Asked about Iran's reaction, Haq stated that the secretary-general has reiterated that the country should not attack neighboring states.
"The Secretary-General has repeatedly said that Iran should not attack any of its neighboring countries. As you know, he has condemned this type of action in the past. We are concerned about any further escalation. Tensions are rising in an already volatile region. We continue to urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid actions that could further aggravate the situation, and urgently commit to reducing tensions," he said.
This Friday, the United States struck bridges and an airport in Iran. In response, Tehran attacked a power plant and a desalination plant in Kuwait, expanding the targets of the conflict to include civilian infrastructure.
At sea, where the conflict has once again affected energy supplies from the Gulf, US marines boarded a tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. Another vessel has been captured by armed men off the coast of Yemen, raising security concerns in another key oil corridor at the entrance to the Red Sea.
Washington and Tehran have been testing the limits of escalation since the collapse of their ceasefire agreement last week, raising the risk of a return to full-scale conflict.
