Maria, 18, and her sister, Laura, 17, are the daughters of Gloria Maria, who died in February 2023, aged 73, as a result of brain metastasis caused by lung cancer. Since then, the two have lived in Rio de Janeiro under the care of economist Paulo Mesquita.
A close friend of the journalist, Mesquita was chosen by Gloria to take charge of her daughters after her death. In addition to monitoring the teenagers' upbringing, he also manages the assets left to the young women.
In 2009, Gloria Maria adopted Maria and Laura. The decision came during a trip to Salvador for volunteer work at the Orphanage of Fraternal Aid Organization, when the former Globo presenter met her biological sisters and decided to adopt them, becoming a solo mother.
