Former STF minister Luís Roberto Barroso is hospitalized in São Paulo

According to the retired minister's office, the infection was caused by a bacteria and led to a process of dehydration, temporarily compromising the function of the kidneys. Because of the change, Barroso needed to be hospitalized for medical monitoring.

The treatment is led by doctor Ludhmila Hajjar. According to the former minister's team, his health is progressing positively, with a good response to the measures adopted, and the forecast is that he will be discharged in the coming days.

Barroso was in Paris when he developed the first symptoms. Dehydration resulting from the infection led to the return to Brazil and hospitalization for clinical monitoring.

Retired from the STF since October 2025, Barroso left the Court after completing a two-year term as president of the court. The vacancy opened by his departure remains unfilled.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva even nominated the Union's attorney general, Jorge Messias, to occupy the seat in the Supreme Court, but the nomination was rejected by the Senate. Since then, the federal government has not yet presented a new name, and the Court continues to function with ten ministers, a situation that could become the longest since the country's redemocratization.
