Calf with three ears The birth of a calf on a rural property in Coromandel, in Alto Paranaíba (MG), drew attention due to an unusual characteristic: the animal was born with three ears, one of them on its back, which is even rarer. ??Do you have any reporting suggestions? Send it to g1 According to veterinarian Enrico Ortolani, it is a congenital malformation, that is, a change that occurs during the development of the embryo. According to the specialist, the anomaly probably appeared in the first 45 days of the cow's pregnancy. Ortolani explains that this type of occurrence is considered very rare, especially due to the location of the extra ear, outside the animal's head. Despite being completely formed externally, it has no auditory function, as it does not have the internal structures necessary to capture sounds. The good news is that the condition should not compromise the animal's quality of life. According to the veterinarian, the calf can live normally with the malformation, without presenting health problems related to the third ear. The expert also states that the characteristic should not be passed on to descendants. This is because it is a malformation, and not necessarily a hereditary genetic change. If the producer decides to remove the extra ear through surgery, the recommendation is that the procedure be carried out only under the supervision of a qualified veterinarian.
