The information was confirmed by the Romanian Football Federation, which recalled that the former player participated in qualifications for the World Cup and the European Championship, in the period between 2007 and 2011.
"The Romanian Football Federation expresses its most sincere condolences to his family, friends and everyone who knew Gabriel Muresan," the federation said.
On social media, the Apold Chamber, the city in which he was mayor, defined the former player "as a dedicated servant to the community."
The athlete played for clubs such as Gaz Metan, Gloria Bistrita, Cluj and Targu Mures, and abroad he wore the colors of Russian club Tom Tomsk.
