Court suspends charging for entry of tourists into Mateiros, in Jalapão The Court suspended the charging of the municipal tourism tax required of visitors entering Mateiros, in Jalapão. The injunction, granted by judge Gil Correa, accepted the arguments that the measure presents signs of unconstitutionality and could harm the economic development of the region. The suspension of the fee will remain in effect until the Court of Justice rules on the merits of the action. The preliminary decision is June 30th. ? For this reason, the R$30 fee per tourist continues to be charged normally. The charge had been in effect since May this year and, according to the city hall, was intended to finance services such as tourist signage, environmental monitoring and garbage collection. However, the judge considered that the tax could make tourist packages more expensive, reduce the destination's competitiveness and harm travel agencies. Mateus, owner of an agency that takes between 500 and 800 tourists per month to Jalapão, stated that the fee generated an unexpected cost for contracts closed in advance. "We work with packages that have been sold for over a year to be carried out now. Charging this from customers creates embarrassment, as it is an expensive investment and the company cannot afford it. This decision is very good because it does not frustrate the customer upon arrival, having to inform them that they need to pay even more to the municipality", said Matheus Bezerra, a businessman in the region. On the other hand, some residents and inn owners advocate maintaining the fee. Luzia Tavares, owner of an establishment in the city, believes that the resource is necessary to improve urban infrastructure. "This money meets the needs we have in the city. I am in favor of the collection continuing, as, in other tourist destinations, travelers also pay fees", he argues. Traffic on the rise Jalapão is experiencing a period of growth in the flow of visitors. According to data from the Tocantins Tourism Observatory, the region recorded more than 50 thousand visits to its attractions in 2025. In the first five months of 2026 alone, more than 5 thousand tourists, including Brazilians and foreigners, visited the Mateiros dunes. See more news from the region on g1 Tocantins.
