Food can be an important ally for those who need to control their blood pressure. Although no fruit replaces medical monitoring or treatment recommended by a healthcare professional, some options concentrate nutrients associated with the proper functioning of blood vessels and the balance of pressure.

In an article published on the Health website, cardiologist Christopher Lee highlighted fruits that can help in this process, mainly because they are sources of potassium, antioxidants, vitamin C and compounds that promote circulation.

Fruits that can help control blood pressure

1. Banana

Bananas are rich in potassium, an important mineral for controlling blood pressure. Low intake of this nutrient can contribute to the development of hypertension over time.

2. Blueberry

Blueberries contain antioxidants, especially anthocyanins. These compounds help protect cells and can promote the production of nitric oxide, a substance that helps relax blood vessels.

3. Kiwi

A source of vitamin C, kiwi can contribute to cardiovascular health. Studies show that the nutrient can help reduce blood pressure in people with hypertension.

4. Watermelon

Watermelon contains L-citrulline, an amino acid that the body converts into L-arginine. This process helps in the production of nitric oxide, which relaxes the vessels and improves blood flow.

5. Grapefruit

Grapefruit also appears among the fruits studied for possible effects on blood pressure. A 2021 study indicated that fruit juice, combined with beetroot juice, helped reduce systolic pressure.

6. Grape

Grapes are sources of polyphenols, plant compounds linked to heart health. Among them are anthocyanins, present in red, purple and blue grapes, as well as quercetin.

7. Avocado

Avocado provides potassium and vitamin E. One unit can contain 975 milligrams of potassium and 4.2 milligrams of vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps protect cells.

8. Pomegranate

Pomegranate contains compounds that combat cellular damage, reduce inflammation and promote blood vessel health. Studies suggest that the fruit can help improve blood flow and contribute to pressure control.

Five foods that should not be eaten raw

Cake batter, unpasteurized milk, ground meat, dried beans and some mushrooms may contain bacteria, toxins or compounds that are harmful to your health. Experts recommend proper cooking or pasteurization before consumption
