"I've been talking to the Brazilians. We've been trying to negotiate. I think there's still a big distance between us, so you'll see a final decision very soon on Brazil, as we have a legal deadline that expires on July 15," said Greer in an interview with Fox Business Network.
This week, representatives of companies and associations from Brazil and the USA asked in hearings that the Donald Trump administration's proposal to apply an additional 25% tariff on Brazilian products not be implemented.
Representatives from the rice, gelatin, seeds, carnauba wax and agricultural sectors stated that the tariffs would increase costs for American consumers, make food, medicine and agricultural inputs more expensive and disorganize production chains in the US itself.
Companies such as Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Tesla, Faber-Castell, eBay and Siemens appear on the list of companies that sent comments to the USTR (Office of the US Trade Representative) asking that the United States not implement the additional 25% tariff on Brazilian products.
Minister Márcio Elias Rosa (Development, Industry and Commerce) stated that Brazil is not discussing the end of the import tax on American ethanol, as was defended by senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), who participated in one of the public hearings in the USA.
President Lula clearly defends that the issue of ethanol should not be addressed in this negotiation, and what's more, it should not be addressed without us also addressing the issue of sugar, which is overtaxed in the United States," he said.
Elias Rosa argued that the entry of American ethanol into Brazil would cause damage especially to the Northeast region, which is home to one of Brazil's production centers. "We need to take a very careful look at this area, which has already been suffering from a price reduction."
