SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - Chief Raoni Metuktire showed improvement in his kidney function, according to a medical bulletin released this Sunday (12). He had a second case of digestive bleeding last Friday (10) during...
The Kayapó leader is conscious, responding to commands, stable, breathing room air, with improved kidney function and coughing with secretions, according to the statement. He is also accepting oral feeding.
On the 30th, Raoni had bleeding in the stomach and duodenum (first and shortest portion of the small intestine), which was soon stabilized. He had to undergo an endoscopy.
After the first hemorrhage, the indigenous leader was taken to the ICU (intensive treatment unit), where he remained under observation until the 6th, when he was transferred to an infirmary.
The chief was transferred from Sinop, in Mato Grosso, to continue health treatment and surgical monitoring of his clinical condition.
The medical teams responsible for the case decided to be admitted to São Paulo after a joint assessment, according to Hospital e Maternidade Dois Pinheiros, where the leader was. Transport was carried out on an aircraft provided by the Government of Mato Grosso.
Raoni has been admitted to Hospital São Paulo since the 14th, after being diagnosed with pulmonary sepsis associated with bronchoaspiration pneumonia. He had presented symptoms the day before, when he registered episodes of vomiting at his home, in the region of Peixoto de Azevedo (MT).
In the capital of São Paulo, monitoring is carried out by surgeon Franz Robert Apodaca Torrez, professor at the Escola Paulista de Medicina da Unifesp.
NEW ADMISSION IN LESS THAN ONE MONTH
The new hospitalization occurred less than a month after Raoni was discharged from Hospital e Maternidade Dois Pinheiros. In May, he was hospitalized after experiencing clinical malaise and respiratory and gastrointestinal complications. Before that, he had also spent five days in hospital to treat abdominal pain associated with a hernia.
The medical team reported, at the time, that the indigenous leader has comorbidities, including COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), heart failure, use of a cardiac pacemaker and diaphragmatic hernia.
Since 2020, Raoni has been admitted to Hospital e Maternidade Dois Pinheiros six times.
The relationship with the unit was built through the UFMT-Xingu Expeditions, an extension project of the Federal University of Mato Grosso in partnership with the hospital, which provides specialized care to the villages of the Capoto/Jarina Indigenous Land.
WHO IS RAONI
Internationally recognized for his defense of the Amazon and indigenous peoples, Raoni gained notoriety in the 1970s when he took a stand against the construction of the Transamazônica highway during the military dictatorship (1964-1985).
In 1989, after meeting British musician Sting, he began a series of international trips and established himself as one of the best-known voices in defense of the Amazon rainforest and indigenous rights.
