Bets: orders on self-exclusion platforms grow 7 times during the World Cup

Despite the massive advertising presence of online betting houses during the World Cup broadcasts, Brazil registered an increase in the number of people who requested self-exclusion from betting platforms.

The self-exclusion tool was launched by the federal government in December last year and allows citizens to register their CPF so that its use can be blocked simultaneously on all legal betting sites.

According to data from the Prizes and Betting Secretariat of the Ministry of Finance, in the first two weeks of the tournament, the average number of daily requests to have the CPF blocked to bet on bets increased almost seven times. The Centralized Self-Exclusion Platform registered, between June 15th and 28th, 17,866 requests per day, compared to 2,594 average daily requests registered in the first half of May.

Once processed, the requests prevent people from using their own CPFs to bet on bets legally authorized to operate in the country. Since the launch of the platform, more than 1 million people have signed up for the service.

The survey also showed that the reasons given by those who made these requests changed. In May, the majority of requests (43%) were for loss of control over the game. In the first two weeks of the World Cup, preventing the use of data on betting platforms became the main reason for registration, cited by 29.5% of applicants. Loss of control over the game came in second place, with 24.13%.

When opting for self-exclusion, the user must provide personal data and choose to block access to the websites for an indefinite period of time or for a pre-determined period, which can vary between one and 12 months. In addition to the platform, another initiative aimed at treating gambling compulsion is the free teleservice provided by the Unified Health System.
