Bought bananas at the supermarket and, a few days later, they were already overripe and full of dark spots? Although it is not possible to completely stop ripening, some simple measures can help slow down the process.

Nutritionist Jana Marques shared with Globo some tips to increase the shelf life of the fruit. One of them was even tested by Lifestyle ao Minuto.

See how to make bananas last longer

1. Hang the bananas

The trick gained popularity on social media and, according to the nutritionist, it really works. When hanging, bananas have less contact with surfaces, objects and other fruits, which can help delay ripening.

The technique also reduces the risk of dents, which encourage the appearance of stains and accelerate rot.

"When the banana rests on a surface, such as a table or a cupboard, it tends to ripen more quickly due to the release of natural gas produced by the fruit itself. By hanging it, this process can be slowed down", explained the expert.

2. Store in the refrigerator

The refrigerator is one of the most traditional ways of preserving bananas, especially during hot periods.

The nutritionist points out, however, that refrigeration tends to darken the skin. This can give the impression that the fruit is spoiled, even when the pulp is still fit for consumption.

3. Wrap the cab with aluminum foil

Another known technique is to cover the ends of the bananas with aluminum foil or plastic wrap.

"When we wrap the cabinho, we reduce the release of natural gas from the banana itself, which helps delay ripening. This method can also be useful for preserving fruits that are already more ripe", stated Jana Marques.

4. Cut the end

The technique follows the same logic as the previous one. If you don't have aluminum foil or plastic wrap at home, you can cut part of the stalk, leaving about half a centimeter.

Lifestyle ao Minuto tested the method and reported that the bananas lasted, on average, two to three days longer, even though they remained in contact with other fruits in the fruit bowl.

Previously, these bananas ended up being used in pancakes or smoothies because they ripened before being consumed.

Leftover food: mistakes that increase the risk of contamination

Time outside the refrigerator, inadequate containers and excessive reheating can compromise food safety. Experts explain how to store leftovers correctly, reduce waste and keep meals longer
