Teams from the Fire Department, Highway Police and Highways Department (DER), Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) and other ambulances were called to respond to the incident. To EPTV, a TV Globo affiliate, driver Valdeci Lourenço de Souza said he lost the brakes and decided to throw the bus against the guardrail to prevent it from going down the bank. "I thought about throwing it at the guardrail to see if it would lessen the impact. Then the bus turned over, but ended up hurting a lot of people. If it went down, it would be even worse.
