According to the Right Whale Research and Conservation Program (ProFranca), on average, a single animal with these characteristics is seen every two seasons of the species on the Brazilian coast. Suddenly, I noticed a white dot from above and, as I approached the drone, I realized that it was a baby. On Monday, the animal was still in the region, between Praia da Ribanceira and Barra de Ibiraquera", he said. Characteristic is rare, says expert According to Karina Groch, responsible for the Right Whale Project, semi-albinos are defined this way because of a rare genetic characteristic: despite being born white, with black spots, as the months go by, their skin turns gray. Therefore, even as adults, it is still possible to distinguish black spots. The coloration, according to the expert, occurs in around 3% of right whales that are born, due to a genetic combination. Most puppies with this condition are male. On the coast of Santa Catarina, only one female with these characteristics has been identified until h "Generally, these puppies are males due to their genetic characteristic, which is the genetic combination that results in this color. But we have already recorded the occurrence of females here and in some other parts of the world", said Karina.
