Operation Extractio II combats illegal mining An operation to combat environmental crime in southeastern Pará destroyed 45 clandestine camps used for illegal gold and copper mining within the Igarapé Gelado Environmental Protection Area (APA), in the Rio Azul region, in Parauapebas, and also in Canaã dos Carajás. The new balance of the action called "Extractio II" was released by the Federal Police (PF) this Monday (20). The operation took place between the 14th and 17th of July and also resulted in the destruction of five hydraulic excavators and more than 3 thousand liters of fuel that powered the machinery used for the crimes. The integrated operation was coordinated by the Federal Police and included the participation of the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), the National Force and the Military Police. In this region, agents disabled and seized: 42 clandestine camps completely destroyed; 20 stationary engines unused; 4 hydraulic excavators unused (destroyed) and 1 seized; 2,100 liters of discarded fuel (2 thousand liters of diesel oil and 100 liters of gasoline); 1 flatbed truck seized (used to transport heavy machinery); 4 motorcycles (3 unused and 1 seized); 10 bladed weapons and 1 firearm destroyed, in addition to 3 ammunition seized; About 200 grams of marijuana incinerated. In Canaã dos Carajás, in the second phase of the operation, the target was clandestine copper extraction, where agents dismantled a deep mining structure: 8 deactivated and unusable copper extraction wells; 3 clandestine camps destroyed; 2 unused crushers on site; 1 hydraulic excavator unused and 1 seized (left under the condition of faithful depositary); 1,000 liters of unused diesel oil; 2 three-phase power transformers seized; Around 3 cubic meters of chestnut wood (a tree protected by law and prohibited from cutting) destroyed by the teams. The destruction of assets such as campsites, engines, fuel and large excavators is a legal measure when there are no viable or safe means of removing the machinery from forests and conservation areas.
