Mother denounces negligence after death of premature baby in Acre Mayra Silva Chaves, 40 years old, mother of baby Lucas Gabriel Chaves Santiago, accuses the Bárbara Heliodora Maternity Hospital, in Rio Branco, of negligence during the care provided to her son and questions the cause of the baby's death, reported by the health unit as sepsis (known as a generalized infection). The boy died on May 12, at 24 days old, after almost a month in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He was born prematurely on April 18, at 32 weeks of gestation, after his mother developed pre-eclampsia during the pregnancy, which was considered high risk. (Understand more below) ? Join the g1 AC channel on WhatsApp To g1, the Acre Health Department (Sesacre) reported in a note that there is no record of a formal statement about the case at the Bárbara Heliodora Maternity ombudsman's office, nor notification from the Public Ministry (MP-AC) related to the facts reported by the mother. (See the full note at the end of the report) The MP-AC informed, through the 2nd Specialized Health Defense Prosecutor's Office, that the circumstances of the baby's death are investigated by the Civil Police, through a police investigation. The body also stated that it monitors the procedure as an inspector of the law and that, after the investigations are completed, it will adopt the appropriate measures in relation to those possibly responsible. After her son's death, Mayra registered a police report at the Specialized Child and Adolescent Protection Police Station (Depca) and began seeking clarification on the case. ''Lucas was admitted to the ICU since birth and died in the early hours of May 12th. The last time I saw him was on the 11th. Hours before I received the news of his death, the medical team informed me that he was well and stable,'' he reported. The mother also reported that the pregnancy was considered high risk due to her age and the development of hypertension during pregnancy. ''How did they say that my son died from a generalized infection if according to the doctors he had already finished treatment and was fine? The death certificate states that the cause of death was sepsis, but my son's head was injured, with bruises,'' he said. She received prenatal care at the city's health unit and was also monitored in Rio Branco, where she traveled every 15 days. The mother stated, however, that she later contacted the prosecutor's office and was informed that there was no court case number yet because it was in the preliminary investigation phase. ''The servers went to my house to collect statements, documents and other materials related to the case. They told me that the information would be forwarded to the 2nd Specialized Public Prosecutor's Office for Health Defense'', he reported. Premature birth and ICU According to her, on April 15, during a routine ultrasound at the Bárbara Heliodora Maternity Hospital, her blood pressure increased. After being evaluated, she was diagnosed with an initial condition of pre-eclampsia and remained hospitalized until April 18, when doctors decided to terminate the pregnancy because her blood pressure was not coming down. "I already knew that he was going to be born and would go to the ICU due to his prematurity and low weight. The problem was with me. Every time they heard his little heart they said that everything was fine, that the heartbeat was normal", he recalled. Lucas was sent to the Neonatal ICU shortly after birth. According to the mother, two days later, on April 20, the baby suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest after receiving formula. "They gave formula to my son, he started vomiting and had a cardiac arrest. They had to intubate him," he said. She states that, after this episode, her son showed constant progress. According to his mother, he gained weight, started receiving breast milk and completed the treatment with antibiotics started shortly after birth to prevent and combat common infections in premature babies. “He was gaining weight, breastfeeding a lot, he had stopped taking the medicine because he was progressing very well, he would soon leave the ICU'', he said. Cranial ultrasound Mayra also reported that, after finishing treatment against infection, she began to notice changes in the baby's behavior. "My son started crying a lot. He put his hand on his head, pulled his hair and ripped off the CPAP," she said. According to her, on May 9, she sought out one of the doctors responsible for the ICU to report that she believed the equipment was hurting her son's head.
