Law provides for R$100 for each wild boar killed in Santa Catarina The Legislative Assembly of Santa Catarina (Alesc) approved a bill that provides for the payment of R$100 per wild boar killed. The species is considered invasive in the state and its disorderly proliferation without natural predators is considered harmful to agriculture. The proposal, deliberated on Wednesday (15), still needs the governor's approval to become law. According to the text, the state of Santa Catarina will pay the amount to anyone who can prove that the animal was slaughtered regularly and, in the case of private properties, with authorization from the land owner. When contacted, he said that the law does not seek to remunerate hunting, but rather the "costs of population control carried out by individuals and legal entities already registered and authorized by environmental agencies." According to the State Agriculture and Livestock Federation (Faesc), the wild boar is an invasive exotic species in Santa Catarina that causes damage to crops and safety risks. Breeding the animal is prohibited by law, but hunting is permitted in the state. What the committees said about the PL The proposal received a favorable opinion from three committees: Constitution and Justice, Finance and Taxation and Agriculture and Rural Development. The Environment and Sustainable Development committee, however, was against the project because it understood that the financial incentive does not, in itself, ensure the sustainable reduction of the population and "does not guarantee environmental results proportional to the public resources used". What the PL says Objective: To establish the Financial Incentive Program for the control of the European wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Santa Catarina (Law nº 18,817/2023). Incentive Value: payment of R$100 per animal slaughtered. Who can receive: individuals or legal entities registered with the environmental agency and duly authorized to manage the species. Payment requirements: Proof of regular slaughter (by means defined in regulation). Authorization from the owner or tenant (in private areas).
