The rural property could only be reached by boat or air. He lived isolated and without access to drinking water or a bathroom and bathed in a river, where he had already been stung by stingrays. Already in the house in an unhealthy situation, he had been bitten by pit vipers twice. A Federal Police helicopter had to be used for work auditors to arrive at the farm and rescue the elderly man (see the video above). The flight from the center of Altamira to the rescue site took two hours. The rural property where he was located is inside the Terra do Meio Ecological Station, a federal conservation unit in Altamira, the largest city in the country in terms of territory and more than 800 kilometers away from the capital Belém. The rescue took place on July 14 and was announced over the weekend by the Labor Audit. The MPT reported this Tuesday (21) that the worker was included in the Altamira social assistance protection network and received medical and psychological care. "The elderly man is in a shelter and will soon meet up with family members to return to the city where family members who had not heard from the worker for years live," informed the MPT. According to the Labor Tax Audit, since 2018 he had lived on the farm without drinking water, with precarious food and in degrading housing. Furthermore, he was in complete isolation, in an area surrounded by forest, without regular access to public services, means of communication, medical care or minimum conditions of dignity. A conduct adjustment agreement was signed in the amount of R$ 120 thousand between severance pay and compensation for moral damages. ? The worker waited for the clay to soak before consuming it, but the water still remained cloudy and unfit for consumption. The house had leaks, misaligned woodwork and part of the dirt floor. The bed was covered in debris and shared space with accumulated trash. There was a constant presence of venomous animals at the site and the worker was bitten twice by jararacas, in addition to keeping vigil to kill bats that attacked the pigs at night. Without a bathroom, he needed to relieve himself in the bush and bathe in the river, where he was once stung by stingrays. The man even considered leaving his job, but gave up for fear of losing his rights. In addition to the degrading situation, he had work responsibilities, being responsible for: maintaining and conserving the property, monitoring the farm, maintaining the airstrip, managing animals and cultivating small crops for subsistence. When he needed medical attention for severe pain in his kidneys, the worker, who is illiterate, has severe hearing impairment and vision problems, walked 27 kilometers through dense forest for around a day and a half until he reached the place where another worker lived. Men worked in conditions similar to slavery. AFT Precarious food The kitchen, according to the agency, was a rustic wooden structure, open on two sides, exposed to animals and vectors. Food was prepared on an improvised wood stove, covered in soot. Opened groceries and fruit were stored directly on a dirty table, next to work tools. According to the worker, the food basically consisted of rice, beans, oil, salt and some seasonings sent sporadically by the employer. The elderly man said that there were periods in which the man spent years without consuming beef or chicken. From the river, the man fished piranhas and consumed only the head, giving the rest to pigs. In 2025, he spent around three months without receiving supplies. He survived only from the pumpkins he grew and the piranhas he caught, prepared only with oil and salt. Inspection rescues elderly person subjected to conditions similar to slavery on a farm located in Altamira (PA) MPT/Reproduction Extreme social vulnerability After the rescue, the task force reported that it arranged for the issuance of a new identity card, registration with the CPF, referral to medical care and initiation of procedures for applying for social security or assistance benefits. In addition, clothes, hygiene products, food and a cell phone were purchased, which allowed him to reestablish contact with family members. The operation included the participation of the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT), the Federal Public Defender's Office (DPU) and the Federal Police (PF). The complaints originated from previous inspections by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) and the MPT itself.
