The Cão Orelha Municipal Veterinary Hospital, the first public facility of this size in Santa Catarina, surpassed the mark of 40 thousand procedures performed in the first three months of operation. Located in Itacorubi, next to the headquarters of the Animal Welfare Board (Dibea), the unit has been meeting a growing demand for free veterinary services for the population of Florianópolis. Between April and the end of June, the hospital established itself as a reference in the care of dogs and cats, offering consultations, exams, surgeries, hospitalizations and emergency care. Services in different specialties The more than 40 thousand procedures carried out during the period include more than 19 thousand outpatient visits, four thousand consultations and screenings, around two thousand hospitalizations, 272 general and orthopedic surgeries, two thousand castrations, almost three thousand imaging exams and more than six thousand laboratory tests. Cases undergo technical evaluation and, when the severity is confirmed, the animal receives immediate care for clinical stabilization, regardless of whether the owner meets the criteria for access to the program. After stabilization, treatment continues following the rules established for users covered by the service. The shift operates every day of the week, at any time. Who can use the service The free service is aimed at residents of Florianópolis registered in the Single Registry (CadÚnico), registered animal protectors and those responsible for community dogs. Animals adopted from a municipal kennel or cattery are also entitled to lifelong monitoring. Routine consultations are carried out by prior appointment, from Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5pm, through the Florianópolis City Hall platform.
