Law No. 14,064/2020, known as the Sansão Law, amended the Environmental Crimes Law and provides for a prison sentence of two to five years, in addition to a fine and prohibition on keeping the animal in cases of mistreatment of dogs and cats. When the crime results in the death of the animal, the sentence may be increased. The Civil Police reported that they are already aware of the case.
