The acquisition of the property was mentioned in a court decision published on July 22nd. In the document, judge Elielson dos Santos Pereira stated that the purchase could have taken place with the aim of creating a personal rapport with him. 'Unfortunate misunderstanding' "It was all just a regrettable misunderstanding. He had no way of even guessing that the judge lived in Arapiraca. It was an unfortunate coincidence," said Raimundo Palmeira. According to the defense, Paulo Augusto has commercial interests in Arapiraca and intended to use the house so that his wife and young children could remain in the city. The children study in Olho d’Água das Flores and Santana do Ipanema, but the family was considering transferring them to Arapiraca next year. The lawyer stated that the defendant spent a few days at the property with his children, but stopped visiting the place as soon as he learned of the judge's presence in the condominium. "He did not seek any contact with the judge. Upon learning that the judge lived there, he immediately followed the lawyers' instructions and never set foot in the house again. The property is closed," he declared. The defense also disputes Paulo Augusto's participation in the two murder attempts investigated in the case. The lawyer stated that the statements gathered in the files would demonstrate that the defendant had no involvement in the crimes. These allegations will still be analyzed by the Court. Request for arrest will be analyzed by the TJ The Public Ministry requested the preventive detention of Paulo Augusto, but the judge of first instance did not analyze the request. As there is an appeal against the case in progress at the Court of Justice of Alagoas (TJ-AL), the magistrate referred the case to judge Tutmés Airan de Albuquerque Melo. The defendant's arrest has not yet been ordered. The lawyer stated that the defense has already presented clarifications about the purchase of the house and considered the judge's decision to send the case to court cautious. “It is clear that the magistrate was surprised to see a person responding to a lawsuit arriving at the condominium where he lives. But he was careful to look at the defense, and we justified it," said Raimundo Palmeira. The defense also claimed that the disclosure of the episode may have been politically motivated, as Paulo Augusto's father is a local politician. The lawyer, however, did not present evidence about the supposed motivation.
