The São Leopoldo Mandic Hospital opened this Monday (13) with 23 beds destined for the Unified Health System (SUS), in Campinas (SP). The unit will offer medium complexity surgeries and hospitalizations and should begin receiving patients by next Monday (20). Located at Casa de Saúde, in the Center, the new structure aims to expand the supply of medium complexity care and help reduce demand on high complexity hospitals in the region, such as Hospital PUC-Campinas and Hospital de Clínicas (HC) at Unicamp. The forecast is to reach 72 beds in the next 60 to 90 days, with nine ICU spaces and seven operating room rooms. At that time, the state government reported that it was in the “final negotiations” to hire 100 new beds at the Casa de Saúde São Leopoldo Mandic. The agreement had been published on June 8, but vacancies were not yet available. According to Guilherme Succi, director of medicine at the São Leopoldo Mandic Group, the unit is ready to receive patients, but the start of hospitalizations still depends on procedures from the State Department of Health. "There is a process within the Secretariat for hospitalizations to begin. But, in our expectation, at the latest by next Monday, July 20th, hospitalizations will actually begin here at the hospital. São Leopoldo Mandic Hospital will not have an emergency room nor will it accept patients on spontaneous demand. All services will be provided by the state's Center for Regulation of Health Services Offers (CROSS). "This is a referenced hospital, so all patients will be sent to this hospital through the State Regulation Center, which is CROSS. So, the patient cannot come directly here. We don't have an emergency room", stressed Succi. The unit starts with 23 beds and plans to expand capacity in the coming months. The institution also has a project to create another 180 beds for the SUS. According to José Luiz Cintra Junqueira, general director of Faculdade São Leopoldo Mandic and president of the hospital, the expansion depends on support from public authorities. "An important thing is to say that it is an expansion project. The expansion project is on our horizon, the creation of another 180 SUS beds. For this, we need the courage of our state, municipal and federation managers", he stated. "Health is expensive. Health is life. Our hospital is philanthropic, let's be clear, it is a philanthropic hospital. We do not aim for any profit. We also can't have a loss, otherwise it won't sustain itself", he highlighted.
