'Great emotion', says funeral director who found baby alive after he was presumed dead The case of baby Noah Gabriel da Cruz Santos, who was presumed dead after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest in Santa Casa de Rio Claro (SP), but was found with vital signs before being taken to the wake, caused great national repercussion. The family does not believe in medical negligence and stated that they saw their son lifeless and with a purple color. Santa Casa reported that there was no error and that all technical and legal protocols for establishing death were strictly complied with. (Read more below). The baby was born with a cleft palate, a congenital malformation that causes an opening in the roof of the mouth and can compromise breastfeeding, speech, hearing and dental development. He was admitted to the Santa Casa Neonatal ICU shortly after giving birth. His health condition worsened and he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest. Medical staff performed resuscitation maneuvers for around 45 minutes. Death was confirmed late Wednesday afternoon (15). Noah remained in the Neonatal ICU for about an hour after his death was declared. The body was sent to await the funeral home chosen by the family. Santa Casa stated that there was no error in declaring the death. About two hours after the death declaration, a funeral home employee noticed vital signs in the baby, who was in a burial bag. She also said that Noah was well looked after during the 32 days he was hospitalized at Santa Casa and that there was no medical negligence. "Sometimes I think we are dreaming, not just me, but I was talking to my husband just now inside the hospital, looking at him [Noah] and he was there moving, kicking his legs, with his eyes open. We are amazed." "We [are] contemplating the greatness of God and admiring our warrior who continues to fight to be well. The institution stated that it had not identified any care failure or procedure that could be reviewed in light of the evidence existing at the time of the death. "The Brazilian protocol for confirming death is recognized for its high rigor and safety," said the note. The hospital highlighted that the Neonatal ICU has a specialized structure and qualified team, including the doctor responsible for care, who has 14 years of experience in neonatology. Santa Casa stated that it respects different interpretations of the episode and recognized the impact of the case on family members and health professionals. The institution stated that the case was seen by professionals and family members as a "true miracle". The hospital ended the note by reaffirming its commitment to science, ethics and transparency, while at the same time classifying the episode as an extraordinary event that deeply impacted everyone involved.
