The São Sebastião City Council's Urban Afforestation Program continues with actions aimed at expanding green areas and reforesting different regions of the municipality. The initiative also promotes public awareness about environmental preservation and sustainability. According to a report from the Department of the Environment (Semam), more than 615 seedlings were planted in the first half of 2026. The program aims to expand the city's vegetation cover, promoting direct benefits to the population's quality of life. The initiative also contributes to strengthening the indicators used in the certification of the Município VerdeAzul Program (PMVA). The actions have the support of the Municipal Nursery, responsible for supplying native seedlings from environmental compensation processes resulting from the suppression of isolated trees, as provided for in Law 2,878/2022. Among the species planted are aroeira, pitanga, ingá, araçá and grumixama. The program also develops integrated actions with schools, associations and residents in different regions of the municipality. The objective is to encourage community participation in planting and increase awareness about the importance of urban afforestation and environmental preservation. During the activities, topics such as the contribution of trees to reducing the temperature on public roads, increasing biodiversity and the importance of planting fruit species to benefit fauna are covered. As a milestone for the actions developed by the program, the initiative's thousandth seedling was planted on December 23, 2025, at Praça Toshio Nakamura, in the Center. The species chosen was a brazilwood, a tree that symbolizes the identity, history and roots of Brazilian culture.
