In the first half of this year, the Amazon recorded the smallest area with signs of deforestation detected by satellite in a decade, reported the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe).

Between January and June 2026, the Real-Time Deforestation Detection System (Deter) identified 1,295 square kilometers of areas under deforestation alert in the biome.

The result represents the lowest level since the beginning of the system's historical series, in 2016.

In June 2026 alone, deforestation alerts totaled 297.26 square kilometers, compared to 457.61 square kilometers in the same month last year. The reduction was 35%.

Between August 2025 and June 2026, deforestation notices in the Amazon reached 2,485.90 square kilometers. In the same previous period, the total was 3,959.98 square kilometers, which represents a drop of 37.2%.

In the Cerrado, the area under deforestation alert in the first six months of the year also showed a decline. 3,142 square kilometers were recorded, the lowest volume since 2021.

In June 2026, notices of suppression of native vegetation in the Cerrado totaled 481.53 square kilometers, compared to 508.69 square kilometers in June 2025. The drop was 5.3%.

In the accumulated period from August 2025 to June 2026, alerts in the Cerrado totaled 4,689.40 square kilometers, compared to 5,091 square kilometers in the same previous interval, a reduction of 7.9%.
