FLAVIO LATIFSÃO PAULO, SP (UOL/FOLHAPRESS) - The Palmeiras board has a well-defined policy for contract renewals for veteran players: expanding the contract year by year, always after an evaluation of the season's performance.

Gustavo Gómez, however, is an exception. The defender, the winningest player in the club's history (13 titles) and who turned 33 in May, will receive an offer to renew for a long period with Alviverde.

WHAT HAPPENED

Leila Pereira considers Gustavo Gómez an example of a player that Palmeiras is looking for, and wants to keep him at the club for as long as possible.

The Paraguayan defender has won 13 titles for Alviverde, 412 games and 46 goals scored (highest scoring defender in the club's history).

Before the World Cup, the Palmeiras board began talks about renewal with Gómez's staff. The defender's performance at the World Cup only reinforced the management's desire to have the defender for a long period.

"I was with Gómez, but not to talk about the future. Anderson [Barros] will certainly have that conversation. We want what is best for all sides and, for Palmeiras, the best thing is for Gustavo to stay with us for a long period. But it's a very calm thing. Anderson will talk to him", said Leila last Friday (17), during an event in honor of Abel Ferreira.

The idea of the Palmeiras management is to renew Gómez's contract until the end of 2029. The last renewal took place in January 2025, and runs until December 31, 2027.

The Paraguayan was immortalized in the Palmeiras Trophy Room for being the most successful athlete in the club's history. The Palestrian sheriff adds to his gallery of titles the second Libertadores championship in 2020 and 2021, the Brazilian tri-championship in 2018, 2022 and 2023, the São Paulo penta in 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2026, the Copa do Brasil in 2020, the Supercopa do Brasil in 2023 and the Recopa 2022 South American Championship.

"Palmeiras is my place in the world, as I always say. I can only be grateful for everything that Palmeiras has done for me and my family. The club has not only helped me as an athlete, but also to become a better father, a better husband, a better person and that is the most important thing for me. I learn a lot from the staff, from my teammates and from everyone. Regardless of the results, I try to learn every day the true meaning of the champion's mentality. A champion is not just about winning titles, it's what you get He gets up after a defeat, he's the one who never gives up and always tries to improve as a person. I still have a lot of wood to burn, we're going to try to secure more titles this year and continue writing more history in this giant club", said Gómez.
