According to Bonelli, Zambelli's last public appearance took place during a meeting of supporters held in a church in Rome. At the beginning of the month, the Brazilian's own lawyers also declared that they did not know where she was.
People close to the case and political allies assess the possibility that the former parliamentarian will try to avoid a new unfavorable judicial decision. For Bonelli, Zambelli follows the Brazilian electoral scenario and can expect an eventual change of government.
“If [Flávio] Bolsonaro wins, the future government may think about granting an amnesty for those who committed crimes like Carla Zambelli,” said the deputy.
Commenting on statements made by Zambelli in the United States, before his trip to Europe, Bonelli said that “no one is untouchable”. He also criticized the use of Italian citizenship as a way to escape Brazilian justice.
“When a person flees from justice, it is not a good attitude, especially when that person has a public responsibility”, he declared.
The Court of Cassation annulled the decision of the Rome Court of Appeal that had authorized the extradition. With this, the request presented by Brazil will be examined again by the Italian Court.
Bonelli believes that the new analysis will be completed in 2026. The Brazilian government is working with the possibility that the trial will take place between September and October. Lawyers Pieremilio Sammarco and Fabio Pagnozzi did not respond to requests for comment on the statements.
At 64 years old, Angelo Bonelli is spokesman for Alleanza Verdi Sinistra, an Italian center-left party. He was born in Rome and was elected deputy for the Emilia-Romagna region. In São Paulo, he participated in an event at the City Hall at the invitation of PV.
The parliamentarian also stated that he informed the Italian police of Zambelli's location before his arrest, which took place on July 29, 2025, in an apartment in the Aurelio neighborhood, in Rome.
Asked about a comparison with the case of former militant Cesare Battisti, Bonelli rejected the similarity. "Cesare Battisti was extradited. Now he is in Italy, in an Italian prison," he said.
