F1: From Leclerc's victory to an unusual error, what happened at Silverstone?

Leclerc smiles again

Charles Leclerc returned to the top spot on the podium after a difficult period. The Ferrari driver, who had faced problems in the previous stage, won at Silverstone safely.

The Monegasque driver hadn't won since the United States GP, in October 2024. In England, he took the lead in the early stages of the race and managed to control the race until the end.

Championship leader is out of points

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, from Mercedes, chased Leclerc for a good part of the race, but was unable to gain enough pace to attack his rival.

The situation worsened in the final laps. With around 11 laps to go, the Italian suffered damage to his car and lost performance. He still pitted twice, crossed the finish line in ninth, but received a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits and dropped to 15th.

Even so, Antonelli remains in the lead of the championship, now 25 points ahead of second place.

George Russell approaches

George Russell finished second at Silverstone and closed the gap to Antonelli in the World Championship. It was the Brit's first podium at home.

The position came after a combination of events in the last few laps. Russell was fifth, moved up due to Antonelli's problems, gained another position after Max Verstappen's escape and reached second place when Lewis Hamilton stopped to change tires during the safety car.

Hamilton, also from Ferrari, finished third. The Maranello team missed the chance of a one-two finish because the race was not restarted, but still placed two drivers on the podium.

McLaren and Red Bull have an irregular race

McLaren left Silverstone with mixed feelings. Lando Norris finished fourth, while Oscar Piastri was 11th after a difficult start to the race.

At Red Bull, Max Verstappen had difficulties with the car, but still seemed capable of fighting for the podium until he escaped the track on lap 48 of the scheduled 52. The error triggered the safety car, which remained until the end of the race. Isack Hadjar, his teammate, finished fifth.

Unusual end at Silverstone

The safety car caused by Verstappen's incident did not leave the track until the final flag. The transmission even indicated that the intervention would end before the last lap, and the teams also received this information over the radio.

The restart, however, did not happen. According to the FIA, there was a software error. As a result, the race ended behind the safety car, frustrating expectations of a final fight between Russell and Hamilton for second place.

Racing Bulls stand out and Audi has better results

Racing Bulls had a good journey in England. Liam Lawson finished sixth, and debutant Arvid Lindblad was seventh. The team completed the fourth race in a row with its two drivers in the points zone.

Alpine also scored with its two cars. Franco Colapinto was ninth, and Pierre Gasly finished tenth, both benefiting from Antonelli's punishment.

Gabriel Bortoleto was eighth and guaranteed Audi its best result of the season, ending a run of seven races without points.

What's next?

After two consecutive race weekends, Formula 1 will take a brief break. The next stage will be the Belgian GP, ??between the 17th and 19th of July.

The race in Spa-Francorchamps will be the penultimate before the traditional summer break.
