The scenario equals the worst South American participation in World Cups since 2002. In that tournament, only Brazil reached the quarterfinals and ended up winning the fifth championship.
If South America lost strength in this edition, Europe confirmed its dominance. Six teams from the continent advanced to the quarterfinals: France, Spain, Belgium, Norway, England and Switzerland.
Africa also remains represented in the competition thanks to Morocco, which eliminated Canada in the round of 16 and remains in contention for the title.
The quarterfinals begin this Thursday (9), with France and Morocco. On Friday (10), Spain and Belgium will face another European clash.
