Brazilian Championship enters the era of semi-automatic offside

With the start of the second round of the championship, the tool becomes available to reduce doubts and speed up the decision process in very adjusted bids - those that even the human eye doubts.

The insertion of technology is part of a crusade to increase the time the ball is rolling in Brazilian football. The margin of error is 1 centimeter.

The first games with the tool will be Athletico-PR x Internacional and Santos x Chapecoense, both at 6:30 pm.

The CBF, from now on, will no longer accept Série A games to take place in stadiums without the semi-automatic system. Therefore, the equipment was installed in 20 stadiums - those that are already the main home of the 20 elite teams, in addition to Arena Barueri, Palmeiras' alternative venue.

The CBF's projection is to invest R$25 million by 2027 in the semi-automatic offside, which has this name because it also requires a final check of the referees and not just the notes that the software makes.

The program transforms the game into a 3D representation and informs the referees in the VAR booth whether a specific player is in an offside position or not. It already draws the line automatically, but the VAR must check whether everything was correct in relation to the point of contact.

Interpretive situations can also occur: the field referee, for example, can be called to the review area to interpret whether a certain player in an offside position participated or not in the play, even without touching the ball.

The project in Brazil was carried out in partnership with the company Genius, which is also a supplier to the Premier League. The system has similarities, but it is not the same as the World Cup. There is no chip in the ball, for example.
