The research compared the brain activity of people who wrote essays with the help of an artificial intelligence model, a search engine or without any digital tool. Participants who worked alone showed more intense and distributed neural networks, while the group that used ChatGPT recorded the lowest levels of connectivity.

How was the MIT study on ChatGPT carried out?
The researchers followed 54 participants during three essay production sessions. They were divided into three groups: one could use a language model, another had access only to search engines, and the third wrote without external tools.
During the activities, volunteers used electroencephalography equipment, known by the acronym EEG, to measure patterns of activity and communication between different brain areas.
In a fourth session, held with 18 participants, part of the group that had used artificial intelligence began to write without the tool. The reverse movement was also tested: people who previously produced the texts alone received access to the language model.

The group that used artificial intelligence showed less brain connectivity during writing when compared to participants who used internet research or worked without any assistance.
Users of the tool also had more difficulty citing excerpts from their own texts and demonstrated less sense of authorship over the material produced.
According to the researchers, the essays written with the help of the model still showed greater similarity to each other in terms of vocabulary, structure and approach to topics.
In the stage in which they needed to write again without the AI, participants who previously depended on the tool maintained lower levels of connectivity in certain ranges of brain activity. The authors interpreted the result as a possible sign of less engagement with the task.
Writing without tools required more brain effort
Participants who produced essays using only their own knowledge showed the strongest neural activity, distributed among the three groups.
This pattern appeared in regions related to attention, the elaboration of ideas, visual processing and memory. The group also demonstrated a greater ability to recall written content and reported a stronger perception of authorship.
When these people started using artificial intelligence in the fourth session, they continued to show greater recall and activation in occipital, parietal and prefrontal areas, at levels similar to those observed among search engine users.
Does ChatGPT harm the brain?
The study does not allow us to conclude that ChatGPT harms brain health. It measured activity during a specific writing task and did not evaluate possible permanent changes, neurological diseases or effects on other forms of artificial intelligence use.
Less activity recorded by EEG also does not necessarily mean worse brain functioning. It may indicate that a task required less effort, but it does not prove, in isolation, a loss of intelligence, creativity or critical thinking.
Researchers who analyzed the work later pointed out limitations related to the sample size, the methodology used in the EEG, the reproduction of the analyzes and the way in which some results were presented.
The scientific magazine Nature also highlighted that experts recommend not generalizing the conclusions of a small experiment to all users or all forms of interaction with artificial intelligence tools.
