According to Gabriela Batista Fontana, professor of the Electrical Engineering course at Faculdade Anhanguera, one of the biggest dangers lies in the dryer's rear filter. "The device prevents dirt from entering the engine, but when it is not cleaned, it hinders the passage of air, makes the engine work harder and heats up too much. It's as if you covered your nose and tried to run: your body becomes overloaded", he explains.
Overheating is one of the most critical factors. This can occur due to blockages caused by accumulated lint, dust or hair. The problem worsens when the dryer is used on sockets or extension cords that do not support its power, which can cause short circuits. “There are cases of melted wires and even fires starting because of a device that is poorly maintained or used recklessly”, warns the teacher.
The professor points out that in addition to regular cleaning of the filter, which should be done every 10 days for those who use the dryer daily, other simple precautions are essential, such as avoiding use with wet hands, not leaving the device on for long periods without a break, always unplugging it from the socket after use and opting for products with the Inmetro seal.
The operation of the dryer is apparently simple, a motor pulls air, which passes through an electrical resistance and comes out hot through the front of the device. The combination of heat and airflow dries strands in seconds. "It seems basic, but it involves components such as thermostat, motor, propeller, resistance and temperature control. If any of them fail, the risk is real", explains the teacher.
Signs such as a burning smell, strange noises or a drop in the dryer's performance should be taken seriously. "Unplug it immediately and take the equipment to an authorized service center. Never try to open the device at home", advises Gabriela.
