During storms, the grains fall from the branches and come into direct contact with the damp earth, which affects the quality of the drink and delays work. On the region's main properties, coffee growers report losses of almost half of the crop before the harvest even ends. This is the case of producer José Carlos de Morais Filho, who manages a plantation with 370 thousand coffee trees. According to him, 40% of production is already lying on the ground. With the devaluation of the grain that came into contact with the land, José estimates a loss of R$400 per bag, which should generate a final loss of around R$700,000. Producer Ellaritta Crude also projects a 40% crop loss on its 450 hectares. The area is cultivated in the rainfed system (which depends exclusively on rainwater for irrigation). The loss is calculated at R$7,000 per damaged hectare. To mitigate the damage, the machinery went into intensive operation in the coffee plantations to collect as much grain as possible from the trees before the arrival of new cold fronts. Another alternative found was the emergency use of manual harvesting. Although the manual process is slower and more costly for the producer's cash flow, it has become the only viable alternative to saving the ripe fruits that have resisted the force of the storms.
