Durigan says betting should be regulated like cigarettes, with restrictions on advertising
SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - The Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, defended this Friday (24) that betting be regulated in a similar way to cigarettes, with restrictions on advertising and measures to reduce the number...
According to him, the current scenario makes more drastic measures difficult, given the strong presence of bookmakers in different sectors - the 20 clubs in Serie A football, for example, have master sponsorship in the sector - and the lack of support from Congress to prohibit the activity.
Today, beneficiaries of social programs and people who joined debt renegotiation programs are already prevented from betting.
During a panel at Expert XP, an investment event promoted by XP Investimentos, Durigan said that the government will "improve the tax law, whatever the cost" and defended measures to contain the growth of mandatory expenses and reinforce the credibility of economic policy.
Statements were made. Durigan participated in the conversation alongside the institution's political analysis coordinator, Paulo Gama, and institutional director, Rafael Furlanetti.
According to the minister, the government intends to present, on August 31st, the budget proposal for next year, which preserves social programs and maintains the path of improving fiscal results.
When commenting on the international scenario, the minister stated that high interest rates in the United States and geopolitical tensions, with the war in the Middle East, have put pressure on inflation in several countries, which, in some cases, have worse fiscal scenarios than Brazil's.
The minister also stated that the government does not intend to adopt capital control measures. According to him, possible changes in the regulation of the financial system cannot be confused with restrictions on the entry or exit of resources from the country.
The minister's participation comes after the United States announced, on Thursday (23), an additional surcharge of 12.5% on Brazilian products, which came into force this Friday (24).
Also on Thursday, Durigan stated in an interview with BandNews that the government will support companies affected by the new tariffs with lines of credit for working capital and for businesses that need to adapt production to access new markets. This week, the government announced a package of R$18.5 billion in resources to help affected companies as part of the Brasil Soberano plan.
The minister also classified the new surcharge as a "mere expedient" to replace the previous 10% global tariff, which had been struck down by the United States Supreme Court.
Last week, a 25% tariff imposed by the US came into force following an investigation into trade practices considered unfair. According to Durigan, with the new surcharge, the United States will now impose tariffs on around 99% of Brazilian imports.
