The film's global box office gross exceeded US$264 million after its first few days in theaters. The film grossed US$124.5 million domestically and another US$139.6 million internationally, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The result surpassed Nolan's previous mark for openings, set by "The Dark Knight Rises." The 2012 film had opened with $249 million.
"The Odyssey" appears as the third biggest release of the year, according to the portal. The ranking is led by "Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie" ($372.5 million) and "Toy Story 5" ($312 million).
The premiere was considered above expectations as it was an R-rated film (for adults) and was almost three hours long. The film arrived in theaters surrounded by expectations as it was a macro production filmed entirely on IMAX cameras, in different countries.
HOMERO'S CLASSIC AND THE HEAVY CAST
The film is based on the classic epic "Homer's Odyssey" and follows Odysseus' return to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Nolan wrote the script and directed the film.
The star-studded cast brings together names like Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. Also in the film are John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Lupita Nyong'o, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, among others.
