João Vitor wore an electronic ankle bracelet. The body was located by members of the public near the Dona Caetana restaurant, in Várzea Grande, and removed from the water by a team from the Fire Department (CBM-MT).
According to police chief Nilson Farias, the victim had injuries to the face and ear. Despite the body showing characteristic signs of drowning, the Civil Police do not rule out the possibility of homicide.
"The victim shows characteristic signs of drowning, but there are also injuries that indicate a possible gunshot. The forensic examination will confirm whether there was an execution and, subsequently, the victim fell into the water and drowned," said the delegate.
The cause of death will still be confirmed by Official Forensic and Technical Identification (Politec) examinations. The investigation seeks to clarify whether João Vitor was killed before falling into the river or whether the injuries had another origin.
The case remains under investigation by the DHPP.
