Medeiros says Bolsonaro warned PL about the risk of launching two candidates for the Senate

In this year's elections, voters will choose two senators per state. Therefore, parties and federations can put up to two names in the dispute. However, according to Medeiros, Bolsonaro assessed that, in Mato Grosso, the best strategy would be to unify the votes in a single candidacy.

The parliamentarian said that he even met with the former president to present the possibility of state deputy Gilberto Cattani also running for the Senate for the PL. The proposal, however, was discarded after a conversation with Bolsonaro, who defended the concentration of the vote.

"We run the risk of launching two names and ending up not electing any. Because it's not the way we think. We launch two names and say: 'ah, the guy will vote for our candidate for the first name, the second for the other'", said Medeiros, after the party convention held this Wednesday (22).

According to him, the idea of launching just one candidacy for the Senate had already been discussed since 2023. The PL's goal is to expand its bench from 2027 and seek a majority among the 81 seats in the Senate.

Double with Mauro Mendes

Medeiros also denied that there is an agreement to double votes with former governor Mauro Mendes (União), who should also compete for a seat in the Senate. The two have been seen in recent months at events in the interior, such as agricultural fairs and exhibitions.

The deputy stated that each candidate will continue to seek their own votes and that the eventual composition of the choice will be made by the voter.

"We will each be looking for votes. There are two candidacies and this approach will be made by the voter, knowing who he will understand", he stated.

“The voter is the one who will choose the second name”, he added.
