PL makes Wellington official to the Government and Medeiros to the Senate, but leaves vice and alliances for August

The event takes place from 9 am to 1 pm, at the party's state headquarters, in Cuiabá. Despite the definition of the two main names on the ticket, the party arrives at the convention with pending issues regarding the majority composition, including the choice of the candidate for vice-governor and the alliances for the dispute.

Wellington stated that the definition of the vice-president will remain until the party conventions deadline.

“Not today, the definition of vice will be on August 5th”, said the senator.

The state president of PL, Ananias Filho, stated that the party is organized to hold the convention, but confirmed that talks about alliances continue. According to him, there are at least three possible compositions under discussion.

"We are talking to Novo and Podemos. And the Democrat also asked to talk to us", he stated.

Podemos, chaired in Mato Grosso by state deputy Max Russi, maintains dialogue with the PL about a possible alliance. Novo, whose pre-candidate for Government is businessman Marcelo Maluf, also appears in the negotiations. Ananias has already stated that Maluf could be appointed as Wellington's deputy if the parties reach an agreement.

Novo was an ally of the PL in the Cuiabá municipal election in 2024, when it nominated then-Colonel Vânia Rosa as vice-president on Mayor Abilio Brunini's ticket. At the beginning of this year, Vânia left Novo and joined the MDB, a party chaired in Mato Grosso by state deputy Janaina Riva, pre-candidate for the Senate.

Another party mentioned in the negotiations is the Democrat, run by pre-candidate Alex Pucineli, who also approached the PL to discuss a possible composition.

Minutes will be open

According to Ananias Filho, the PL will hold the convention this Wednesday, but will leave the minutes open until August 5th, the deadline established by the Electoral Court for holding party conventions.

As a result, the definition of alliances, coalitions and composition of the majority ticket will be the responsibility of the party's State Executive.

"We have to leave the minutes open. And with the Executive's competence, close all alliances and the calendar on August 5th", said Ananias.

Proportional plates

In addition to the uncertainty in the majority, the PL is still working to close the list of candidates for state deputy. The acronym has 20 names, but can launch up to 25 candidates for the Legislative Assembly.

The situation is different in the race for federal deputy. The party has 15 names for a list that needs nine candidates.

Among the pre-candidates for state deputy are current parliamentarians Faissal Calil and Gilberto Cattani, as well as substitute Xuxu Dalmolin, from the Sorriso region.

Among the women, the first lady of Cuiabá and councilor Samantha Iris stand out, as well as doctor Luciana Horta, the most voted councilor in Rondonópolis in 2024.

The list also includes former mayors, such as Abmael Borges, from Vila Rica, and Alcino Barcelos, from Pontes e Lacerda.

Mayors' resistance

Wellington Fagundes' pre-candidacy also faces resistance within the PL itself. Mayors affiliated with the party in some of the largest municipalities in Mato Grosso have already expressed support for the re-election of governor Otaviano Pivetta (Republicans).

Among them are Abilio Brunini, from Cuiabá, Flávia Moretti, from Várzea Grande, and Cláudio Ferreira, from Rondonópolis.

Abilio has already publicly stated that he preferred a composition between PL and Republicans, with the party indicating the name of vice-president on Pivetta's ticket. The mayor cited the friendly relationship and the political and administrative partnership built with the governor.

“I’m rooting for his re-election and I’ve already made that clear,” said Abilio.

"I told him that the ideal would be for us to create a composition of the PL, so that the PL would be the runner-up. That would be ideal for me", he added.
