The Union convention was brought forward to July 30, a Thursday, and will decide whether to launch Senator Jayme Campos into the government or support the candidacy for re-election of Governor Otaviano Pivetta (Republicans), as suggested by the party's president, former governor Mauro Mendes.
The deputy avoided predicting which position he would defend within the MDB, but said he was close to Senator Jayme.
"You can't say anything, because you talk today and tomorrow everything changes. The 30th will be important. I, in particular, have a very close connection with Jayme Campos. I really like him and I've always had a fantastic relationship with him. Let's wait," he said.
In a recent interview, the regional president of the MDB, deputy Janaina Riva stated that, today, Jayme's pre-candidacy is with “more defenders” within the acronym to support Palácio Paiaguás.
Despite the personal affinity, Dr. João highlighted that the MDB has held dialogues with all the main pre-candidates. According to him, leaders of the party have already spoken with Jayme, with governor Otaviano Pivetta (Republicans) and also with senator Wellington Fagundes (PL), who maintains a close political relationship with the party and is the father-in-law of deputy Janaina.
"The MDB is talking to everyone. It talked to Jayme, it already talked to Pivetta last week, it has talked to Wellington. Let's wait for all this to see what will happen", he stated.
“Faithful of the scales”
In the secretary general's assessment, the MDB's position could be decisive for the formation of the majority ticket.
"I think the MDB will end up being the right balance in this story. How many people will be candidates? We don't know. The MDB will talk, choose a side and walk together", he said.
The parliamentarian, who is a candidate for re-election, pointed out that it could happen that the party does not form a coalition with any pre-candidate for Paiaguás and leaves members free to support candidacies for the majority.
"The MDB could be left without a candidate for government, it could follow, or it could support. This candidacy for the Senate is a very strong candidacy, consolidated by congresswoman Janaina, who is doing very well in the polls. The MDB does not necessarily need a candidacy for governor", he stated.
The State MDB has not yet defined the date of its convention, when it will define candidates and support, but the tendency is for it to be only in August. The Electoral Court determined that party conventions must take place from July 20th to August 5th.
